Make your vacation escape to the lush, tropical island of Oahu. Enjoy your much-needed break surrounded by sand, sun, fun, and plenty of rest and relaxation. You’ll find plenty of things to keep you busy, on Oahu.
Here are some of the best things to do Oahu during your Hawaiian vacation!
1. Catch a Wave on Waikiki Beach
First things first, you can’t come to Oʻahu and not hit up Waikiki Beach. This iconic stretch of sand is perfect for soaking up the sun, people-watching, and, of course, surfing.
Even if you are a first-timer, the gentle waves here are ideal for catching some gnarly rides. And if surfing isn’t your thing, no worries—grab a paddleboard or just float around and enjoy the stunning view of Diamond Head.
2. Shop Anytime from ABC Stores
The stores are a Hawaiian convenience store staple throughout the island chain. You won’t have far to go before encountering one – there’s likely one within walking distance of your accommodations.
Convenience items include bottled water, grocery items like bread and milk, and Hawaiian—and beach-themed souvenirs. If you forgot some sandals, you’ll likely find a pair to fit your vacation needs in one of these stores.
3. Explore the North Shore
If you are into surfing and want to witness some of the best beaches on Oahu, the North Shore is the best place to visit! It’s one of our favorite places to go to due to its beautiful beaches, topping with the high waves. Although the beaches on North Shore are a surfer’s paradise, it’s also so much more.
While exploring the North Shore, make sure to stop by the Sunrise Shack, a popular spot known for its iconic little yellow hut, delicious smoothies, and açaí bowls.
In the winter months, the waves here get massive, attracting the best surfers from around the globe. Even if you’re not surfing, it’s thrilling to watch the pros in action at spots like Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay.
After you’re done with the exciting time playing around the waves, take a stroll through Haleiwa, a charming town filled with surf shops, art galleries, and killer food trucks. Don’t leave without trying Oahu’s famous shave ice from Matsumoto’s—trust me, it’s legendary.
4. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth at Big Island Candies
For over 40 years, the company has been home to some of Hawaii’s best cookies, chocolates, confections, and sweet tooth-satisfying goodies. Choose from milk chocolate-dipped Macadamia nut shortbread, cocoa-dusted chocolate almonds, Hawaiian Red Chili toffee, and a variety of other treats.
Pair your new favorites with one of their coffee blends. For those who can’t decide on one item, there are gift baskets and boxes that offer a combination of sweet, delicious flavors!
5. Hike Diamond Head Crater
Are you visiting Oahu with your entire family? Hike the legendary Diamond Head Crater! For those who love a good hike with a reward at the end, Diamond Head Crater is calling your name.
Hiking to the top is relatively short but steep, and the views from the top are absolutely worth every bit of effort. The best part is that people of any age group can easily hike this trail, making it a great family-friendly activity!
You’ll get a panoramic view of Waikiki and the Pacific Ocean that’ll make your Instagram followers green with envy, which is why this is also among our favorite hikes. Remember to bring water, a hat, and your camera—you’ll need them all!
6. Listen to Live Music at Blue Note Hawaii
Honolulu Magazine and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser have rated the club Hawaii’s Best Live Music Venue. The venue hosts two shows nightly and is full of world-class talents.
You’ll hear the best musicians in jazz, pop, rock, reggae, and traditional Hawaiian music. Added to the music, enjoy a unique dinner experience, craft cocktails, and more.
When we went here, we saw lots of tourists swaying their bodies to the music and enjoying their time. We’re sure you’ll enjoy it here, too!
7. Take a Helicopter Tour
Wouldn’t it be amazing to see the entire island from the sky? You’ll be flying in the air and looking down at the beaches and the majestic ocean from the top.
For a bird’s-eye view of Oʻahu’s stunning landscapes, consider taking a helicopter tours. Fly over lush valleys, dramatic sea cliffs, and cascading waterfalls inaccessible by land.
It’s an exhilarating way to see the island from a new perspective and capture breathtaking photos of its natural beauty.
8. Visit Foster Botanical Garden
While there are many botanical gardens on Oahu, we highly recommend the oldest Foster Botanical Garden.
Located in downtown Honolulu, Foster Botanical Garden is a lush oasis showcasing a diverse collection of tropical plants from around the world.
You can stroll through scenic pathways shaded by towering trees, explore themed gardens like the Butterfly Garden and Orchid Conservatory, and marvel at rare and exotic flora. It’s a peaceful retreat perfect for nature lovers and photographers alike.
9. Snorkel at Hanauma Bay
Want to witness the expansive marine life on Oahu? Dive into an underwater paradise at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. This popular spot is a must-visit for snorkeling enthusiasts.
The bay is home to vibrant coral reefs and a myriad of marine life, including the adorable humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa (try saying that three times fast!), tropical fish, and the native Hawaiian green sea turtles.
Get there early to beat the crowds and enjoy a more serene experience. We’ve seen it get seriously crowded. Plus, the bay is a protected area, so make sure to respect the rules and help keep it pristine. Also, keep your snorkel gear handy to do the activity without any hitch!
10. Purchase Made in Hawaii Products from CocoNene
If a “Made in Hawaii” stamp is important for the items you pick up during your Hawaiian trip, make sure to add a stop here.
You’ll find authentic, fun products that celebrate “ohana and Hawai’i’s unique sense of place.” Every item, including wood picture frames, wall art, ornaments, games, and more, is made right in Hawaii!
11. Whale Watching Cruises
To see the adventurous side of Oahu, book whale-watching cruises if you want to be up close to the whales. During the winter months (roughly December through April), Oʻahu’s waters become a playground for humpback whales migrating from Alaska to Hawaii to breed and give birth.
This is one of our favorite things to do on the North Shore. Several companies offer whale-watching tour departing from Honolulu and the North Shore. These excursions provide an opportunity to see these majestic creatures up close as they breach, tail slap, and sing their haunting songs.
12. Shopping on the Famous Destinations On Oahu
Oahu is also a great place to shop. From shopping for local products to fresh produce and luxury shopping, you can find everything on the island.
Waikiki, Kailua, Manoa, and many other places across Oahu hold farmers’ markets. You’ll find homemade and handmade arts, crafts, and more. Pick up fresh produce, honey, and other delicious ingredients for your next homemade meal.
If you’re looking for fashion, there are several malls and shopping centers, including Windward Mall, Ala Moana Shopping Center, Royal Hawaiian Center, and many others. You’ll find what you’re looking for, from necessities left behind at home to the perfect “Made in Hawaii” souvenir.
13. Venture to Lanikai Beach
While Oahu is filled with beaches, we suggest you don’t miss out on visiting this popular destination. Often hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Lanikai Beach in Kailua (Windward Oahu) is pure paradise.
Just a short distance away is Kailua Beach, where you can embark on an outrigger canoe adventure with Kailua Ocean Adventures, paddling out to the Mokes islands and enjoying the pristine beaches and amazing views.

Kayaking to the nearby Mokulua Islands is a popular activity, offering even more beautiful scenery and a chance to spot some wildlife. This is the place to go for those postcard-perfect beach vibes.
14. Engage in a Karaoke Evening
There is an array of karaoke bars and locales that offer the fun – and often embarrassing – activity. Showcase your own talent, or cheer on those brave enough to get on stage.
Visit the Wang Chung’s Karaoke Bar on Waikiki, an LGBTQ+ bar with great karaoke opportunities. It’s an exciting place to visit with your friends.
If you’d rather display your talents for only your loved ones, several karaoke clubs offer special private rooms so you can enjoy the night without the dreaded embarrassment.

The ranch offers various tours, including ATV rides, horseback riding, and jungle expeditions. It’s an action-packed way to explore the island’s diverse landscapes.
16. Party at a Luaus
Experience the spirit of aloha at a traditional Hawaiian luau. These festive gatherings feature delicious food, lively music, and hula dancing.
You won’t have to go far to find a place where you can attend an authentic Hawaiian luau. These traditional Hawaiian parties include native Hawaiian cuisines like poi, poke, lomi salmon, and more. Entertainment is often traditional Hawaiian music, kanikapila, and hula.
One of the most popular luaus on Oʻahu is at Paradise Cove, where you’ll be treated to an unforgettable evening under the stars. It’s a fantastic way to wrap up your island adventure, complete with a lei greeting, an imu ceremony, and a feast fit for a king.
Be careful! Some shows may even pull you up on stage for a hula lesson! Many hotels offer shows nightly or weekly, while others are produced by private companies at other locations around the island.
17. Step Back in Time at Pearl Harbor
We’ve got something for the history buffs too! A visit to Pearl Harbor is both sobering and fascinating. The site includes the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.
